Another JavaOne has come and gone -- another Brigadoon.  The festivities of 2001,  the 6th annual world gathering of Java devotees, probably marks the last (and best) of its breed: I suspect that in the future JavaOne will have to be staged in multiple cities, probably asynchronously, which is too bad -- perhaps in time, synchronous multi-city shared celebrations will be commonplace.  As small as the world has become, there are no cities large enough to host some events.  JavaOne is small in comparison to other communities that would gather together en masse if only they could find suitable space.  Realtime personal broadband has the potential to provide infinite conference facility configurations; actual virtual reality (AVR), via agents, avatars and spaces (like JavaSpaces) will provide worlds galore -- extensible mirrors, funhouse and otherwise.

Here are a few photos from my June days in San Francisco -- the weather, BTW, was the reason people move to the bay area and brag about the climate.  I stayed at the Monticello on Ellis, right next to a spot where the trolley cars turn around and head back up the hill.  It's one of those cool little boutique hotels near Union Square and China Town in San Francisco -- the kind of little hotel that makes you wish you were in the hotel business at precisely that level of investment...

JavaOne shots:

The Alumni Lounge was cool -- away from the maddening crowd but still, no doubt, a developer conference at its best.

Hanging out, catchin' rays, contemplating MIDlet coding nuances...

Cool dudes, cool bags...
